The History of Merrist Wood

In WWII, a Halifax Bomber on its first operational sortie (referred to as a Nursery Raid), was mistakenly shot down by an RAF night fighter.

The bomber went down with two starboard engines blazing and the night sky was illuminated for miles around. A witness noted that it was, 'like a large flaming torch in the sky from the Hog's Back to Wood Street'.

There is a memorial on the course to commemorate the downed aircraft and crew, where a wreath is traditionally laid every year on Rememberance Day.
